Memphis may be the next landing spot for a program that trains and teaches students about acquisition of property.
Earlier this month, Frayser Community Schools CEO, Bobby White met with program officials who have spearheaded the efforts in Detroit. During the visit White met with Dan Gilbert (owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Quicken Loans) for a tour of the city.
“We saw the good, bad, and ugly of a beaten city trying to bounce back. The renovation they’ve completed downtown is amazing,” White said.
Under the program, once students are trained they will be given full or partial ownership of selected properties within their neighborhoods. Program leaders said Memphis could benefit from the program because it is similar to Detroit in the number of vacant lots and blight.
