FCS Welcomes New Humes Middle School Principal

It is with great pleasure that we introduce Dr. Marcus Matthews, who will serve as the new Principal of Humes Middle School. Dr. Matthews will begin his journey with Frayser Community Schools for the 2021-22 school year.

A Memphis native, Dr. Matthews is a graduate of the former Westside High School. He then went on to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism from the University of Memphis. Continuing his studies at the U of M, he also attained a Master of Arts in Instruction and Curriculum Leadership and a Doctorate of Higher and Adult Education. Additionally, Dr. Matthews holds a licensure in Instructional Leadership from Christian Brothers University.

Possessing an extensive background in education, the long-time educator has held positions as an English Teacher, Literacy Specialist, Behavioral Analyst, Behavioral Specialist, and Dean of Students. Currently Dr. Matthews serves as the Assistant Principal of the Nicholas Hobbs Academy (Youth Villages).

As an author of the book, Urban ACEs: How to Reach and Teach Students Traumatized by Adverse Childhood Experiences, Dr. Matthews is well-versed and trained in Adverse Childhood Experiences, and often incorporates his knowledge and expertise in his teaching and leadership practices.
