Group of MLK Students Receive Scholarships from Tennessee State University

More than 20 seniors at Martin Luther King College Preparatory High School, are one step closer to a making their college dreams a reality after receiving scholarships from Tennessee State University.

The scholarship ceremony, that took place Tuesday, was a surprise to most students.

“When I first came in, I didn’t know what was happening,” said Kristen Tolbert, a senior at MLK College Prep. “I can say I was excited to receive a scholarship…because TSU was on my list of schools.”

Tennessee State University (TSU) offered MLK Prep seniors and other students around Memphis both partial and full-ride scholarships based on GPA.


The University partnered with local Shelby County School Board Commissioners, Miska Bibbs and Stephanie Love to offer 1600 scholarships to students across Memphis.


“Our kids will be successful; our kids will succeed,” said Stephanie Love, Shelby County School Board member who assisted in spearheading the scholarship program.
